PRODUCT MANAGEMENT CARDS
Express requirements as user stories

1. Description
  • Traditional requirements often sound technical and abstract, making it hard for teams to connect with customer value. User stories flip the perspective: they express requirements in simple, human-centered language. A user story describes who the user is, what they want to achieve, and why it matters. This approach ensures requirements are actionable, testable, and always linked to customer value.

2. Benefits
  • Clarity: stories are easy to understand for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Customer focus: keeps the team aligned with real user needs instead of system features.
  • Collaboration: encourages dialogue between business, design, and development.
  • Flexibility: stories are lightweight and can be reprioritized as needs change.
  • Testability: acceptance criteria turn stories into measurable outcomes.

3. Methodologies
  • The Standard Format
    • “As a [user role], I want [goal] so that [reason/outcome].”
    • Example: As a frequent traveler, I want to save my payment details so that I can book flights faster.
  • INVEST Criteria
    • Good user stories are Independent, Negotiable, Valuable, Estimable, Small, Testable.
    • Use these criteria to check story quality.
  • Three Cs Framework
    • Card (the written story), Conversation (discussion between stakeholders), Confirmation (acceptance criteria).
    • Encourages stories as starting points, not finished specifications.
  • Acceptance Criteria
    • Define “done” with clear conditions: what must be true for the story to be complete.
    • Example: User can store up to three payment methods securely.
  • Story Mapping
    • Organize stories along the user journey to visualize the big picture.
    • Helps prioritize MVP and subsequent releases.

4. Tools
  • User Story Template (Excel / PDF) → quick format for capturing stories.
  • INVEST Checklist → ensure each story meets quality standards.
  • Story Mapping Canvas → align stories with user journeys and product roadmap.
  • Digital boards (Jira, Trello, Miro) → manage, refine, and prioritize stories collaboratively.
  • Acceptance Criteria Sheet → structure for defining testable outcomes.

Expressing requirements as user stories is more than a format — it’s a mindset: build features starting from user value, not from system functions.
